95% Of Energy Saving Lamps Non-Compliant With Standards

The number of energy saving lamps that are non-compliant with the standard specifications increased to account for 95% of the total number of saving lamps in the local market, said Maged Ahmed, head of the Electronics Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce.

Maged told Amwal Al Ghad that the Egyptian standard specifications are hardly achieved by the existing factories in Egypt as the production lines are not qualified to produce lamps with such specifications. In addition, the production and distribution of these lamps are not well supervised.

The Electronics Division will submit a memorandum to the Minister of Electricity and Energy suggesting the halt of importing and manufacturing of the tungsten light bulb which is not an energy saver, so as to reduce the power consumption. The power capacity of the tungsten light bulb ranges from 10 watts to 200 watts and its lifespan is less than 1000 hours. Maged affirmed that the factories producing the tungsten light bulb shall be compensated, when their production is stopped.

Maged called on the cabinet to allow the importing of energy saving lamps and reduce the customs tariffs on them.
