Egypt advances 11 places in UNCTAD 2019 business-to-consumer e-commerce index

Egypt has moved up 11 places in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) Business-to-Consumer (B2C) E-commerce Index ranking for 2019.

UNCTAD’S B2C E-commerce Index measures an economy’s preparedness to support online shopping.

Egypt has been ranked 102 out of 152 countries in the index this year, compared to 113 in 2018. UNCTAD report was based on the classification of countries on several axes, including account ownership in a financial institution and the proportion of Internet users and secure its services.

The progress in Egypt’s ranking was driven by the its efforts to support the e-commerce sector, by setting a clear strategy for digitisation and enhancement of electronic payment methods.

E-commerce is one of the most promising sectors in Egypt, especially after some companies operating in this field had proven their ability to contribute effectively to its growth.

Netherlands has topped the index for the second consecutive year. Switzerland, Singapore, Finland, and the United Kingdom ranked second, third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
