Duweiqa Disaster’s Vicitms Need New Governor’s Support

Yesterday has witnessed the fourth anniversary of the Duweiqa disaster which resulted in the death of hundreds of Mokattam Hills’ residents due to a rock slide in the 28th of September 2008.

Although many years have passed and even after the 25th of January Revolution, Duweiqa residents are still suffering from being neglected by officials, particularly the Cairo Governor. The citizens also question the integrity of the committees assigned to determine those who really need apartments or not.

Ibrahim Mohamed, one of Monsha’at Nasser’s residents, stressed that their suffering is  increasing day after day. He added that the apartments offered to those affected by the disaster, as claimed by the governorate, go to people who are not in need of them. As an evidence of that, Mohamed explained that his family and some other disaster-inflicted people have been living in a run-down house since the incident.

In a similar context, Mokattam Hills’ residents noted that their hardships are not restricted to housing needs, rather they also suffer from poor sanitation, contamination of drinking water, lack of schools that provide good-quality education, in addition to the randomly increasing number  of population and hotbeds of crime.

In light of the the Duweiqa disaster’ fourth anniversary, the citizens bid the new Governor Dr. Osama Kamal to take their issue into consideration and pay them a visit.
