Egypt, AFD ink €50m deal to upgrade Cairo Metro Line 1

Egypt has signed a funding agreement worth €50 million ($56.3 million) with the French Development Agency (AFD) to finance the upgrade and development of Cairo Metro’s Line 1, Egyptian minister of international cooperation Rania Al-Mashat said on Sunday.

The project aims to upgrade and develop the first metro line at a length of 55 kilometres (km) extending from New Marg station to Helwan station, Al-Mashat added in a statement.

The upgrade includes a comprehensive repair of the line’s systems and infrastructure, together with maintaining the efficiency of operational services during the upgrade.

This agreement will contribute to achieving four sustainable development goals (SDGs): SDG 8 decent work and economic growth, SDG 9 industry, innovation and infrastructure, SDG 11 sustainable cities and communities, and SDG 17 partnerships for the goals
