Egypt’s unemployment rate drops to 7.2%

Egypt’s unemployment rate declined 7.2 percent in the first quarter, the state-owned statistics agency CAPMAS announced on Sunday. It goes down 0.2 percent in the similar quarter of the previous year, which recorded 7.4 per cent.

The labour force, which includes employed and unemployed persons, stood at 29.895 million during the first quarter of 2022, compared with 29.653 million during the previous quarter, up 0.8 percent, according to the latest data by CAPMAS.

The urban manpower was 13.170 million, while in rural was 16.725 million. Men’s labour force was 24.670 million, while women were 5.225 million. The data indicated that number of employed had increased 297 thousand during the current quarter from the previous quarter. The jobless people had fallen by 55 thousand, rising the labour force by 242 thousand.

The number of unemployed recorded 2.145 million, 7.2 percent of the total labour force, to 1.22 million men and 925 1,000 women.

The men’s unemployment rate was 4.9 percent of the total men labour force in the current quarter, while it was 5.2 percent in the previous quarter compared to 5.6 per cent in the similar quarter a year earlier.

The women unemployment rate was 17.7 percent of the total among women labour force in the current quarter, while 17.8 per cent in the previous quarter compared to 15.9 percent in the similar quarter of the previous year.
