Popular Sudanese singer Shaden Mohamed Hussein Grdood was killed in Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman on Saturday, amid bloody clashes in the country, according to the singer’s friends and family.
The exact circumstances of her death remain unknown. Thousands of artists and public figures have mourned her death, including known singer Atif Anees and poet Madani El-Nekhly, who has also called for an end to the war.
Hussein is one of over 750 people killed since the clashes started in mid-April between Armed Forces of Chief Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan and his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who leads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Hussein has been active on social media before her death. Her last post on social media was posted hours before her death wherein she urged the Sudanese people to document the war through writing.
On her Facebook bio, Hussein wrote in Arabic; “By love, I reached my soul, and by love I knew God. Thank you, Allah, for contentment and love.”
