UAE launches Q3 ’24 Clean Energy Certificates auction

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced the opening of registration for its Q3 2024 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction in Abu Dhabi, set to close on September 13, 2024.

CECs allow Abu Dhabi-based entities to decarbonise their energy consumption and track progress towards environmental goals by certifying that their electricity comes from renewable or clean sources.

This auction introduces wind clean energy certificates derived from the UAE’s first utility-scale wind programme, established through a power purchase agreement with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (PJSC), Masdar.

The inclusion of wind CECs expands the range of renewable options available, supporting Abu Dhabi’s energy transition and aiding various sectors, including energy, industry, real estate, healthcare, sports, and events.

EWEC CEO Othman Al Ali emphasised the company’s role in accelerating the clean energy transition and highlighted the growing commitment of entities to reduce carbon emissions in alignment with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

Each CEC, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh), complies with the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard).
