Bangladesh plans to tender 10 solar power plants

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will open tenders for 10 solar power plants totalling 500 MW capacity, in line with the country’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The tender process is expected to commence in the first week of November. The decision to construct these solar power plants was initially made under the Quick Supply of Power and Energy (Special Provisions) Act, 2010 (Amendment 2021). However, concerns were raised regarding the potential for inflated costs and irregularities in the procurement process.

Following the formation of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, 40 power plant projects initiated by the previous administration were cancelled. The current government has emphasised the importance of transparent and competitive bidding processes.

In line with this commitment, the BPDB will now use the open tender method to select contractors for the 10 solar power plant projects. This approach is expected to ensure fair competition and cost-effective project implementation.
