European stock markets opened higher on Tuesday, tracking upbeat sentiment in the U.S. where better-than-expected earnings results from Alcoa Inc.AA +1.41% sparked cautious optimism about the earnings season.
The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP +0.66% picked up 0.7% to 294.39, building on a 1.4% gain from Monday. Shares of Electricite de France SA FR:EDF +6.96% jumped 6.7% after UBS lifted the firm to neutral from sell.
Shares of Siemens AG DE:SIE +1.66% rose 1.5% after Deutsche Bank raised the industrial conglomerate to hold from sell. Among country-specific indexes, Germany’s DAX 30 index DX:DAX +0.75% added 0.7% to 8,026.11, while France’s CAC 40 index FR:PX1 +0.54% gained 0.5% to 3,843.72.
The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index UK:UKX +0.72%traded 0.7% higher at 6,496.58.
