Egypt’s NFSA now oversees local food market starting 1 January

Egypt’s National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) is assuming full responsibility for monitoring food safety in the domestic market starting 1 January, 2026, the authority said, under Law No. 1 of 2017.

NFSA Chairman Tarek El-Houby said the move follows coordination with the Ministry of Health and Population to ensure a smooth transition without disrupting ongoing inspections or public health protections.

He described the step as a strategic shift aimed at strengthening market regulation, ensuring compliance with NFSA standards, and boosting consumer confidence, in line with international food safety and quality standards.

The NFSA said it would work closely with all relevant agencies to ensure effective oversight and protect public health, while also praising the ministry’s historic role in establishing the foundations for the authority’s new responsibilities.
