Egypt’s FM heads to Washington for talks with US officials, IMF-World Bank meetings
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty travelled to Washington on Tuesday for talks with senior US officials and lawmakers, as Cairo looks to reinforce its strategic partnership with Washington amid rising tensions across the Middle East.
The minister is expected to meet Secretary of State Marco Rubio and members of Congress, the Foreign Ministry said, with discussions set to focus on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing rapidly evolving developments in the region.
The visit comes at a sensitive moment, as conflicts and political uncertainty continue to reshape alliances and test long-standing partnerships in the Middle East.
Beyond diplomacy, Abdel-Atty’s trip carries an economic agenda. He will take part in the annual meetings of the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in his capacity as Egypt’s WB governor, holding talks with international financial institutions on global economic conditions and financing priorities.
For Egypt, the meetings offer a chance to align external support with domestic economic priorities. They also underscore Cairo’s broader effort to pair geopolitical engagement with economic diplomacy, seeking investment and financial stability in an increasingly volatile environment.
