Damietta Port moves 5,276 tons through Egypt-Italy Ro-Ro transit line

Egypt’s Damietta Port handled about 5,276 tons of cargo through an indirect transit service linking Italy with Gulf markets and Iraq between 20 March and early June, the transport ministry said on Thursday.

The service, launched in March via the Egypt-Italy roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) shipping line between Damietta and Italy’s Port of Trieste, transported cargo on 323 freight units during 12 voyages, according to the ministry’s data.

The latest shipment included 49 freight units carrying food products, dairy products, infant formula, equipment, and supplies weighing about 740 tons. The cargo is destined for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Iraq.

Under the transit arrangement, cargo arriving from Trieste is unloaded at Damietta Port and transported across Egypt to Safaga Port on the Red Sea before being shipped onward to Gulf markets and Iraq.

The United Arab Emirates was the largest destination for cargo transported through the corridor, receiving 2,258 tons, or about 42.8 per cent of total volumes. Saudi Arabia followed with 947.467 tons, while Kuwait received 859.619 tons.

The service is part of Egypt’s efforts to strengthen its role as a regional logistics hub by linking European and Middle Eastern markets through its port and transport infrastructure.

Damietta Port said the corridor benefits from Egypt’s geographic location and integrated transport network, helping reduce transit times between Europe and Gulf destinations.
