Egypt’s SCZONE has 212 operating factories – PM

Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has 212 operating factories, more than three times the number it had four years ago, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said on Sunday.

The factories employ tens of thousands of Egyptian workers, Madbouly said during a press conference following a tour of the zone.

Four years ago, the zone had only about 30 per cent to 35 per cent of its current number of factories, he said.

Nearly 140 factories have been established and brought into operation in the zone over the past four years, Madbouly said.

A further 176 factories are under construction and are expected to be completed over the next 18 months to two years, bringing the total number of factories in the zone to nearly 400, he said.

“Back in our school days, we learned that the Suez Canal is not just a trade corridor … Today, the Suez Canal is an international industrial and logistics hub,” Madbouly said.

He said investments in infrastructure, including Ain Sokhna Port and transportation networks, had supported the zone’s industrial and logistics development.

“Every three months, I’m thrilled to come here to inaugurate new factories,” Madbouly said.
