Egypt studies new inlet for Lake Burullus to improve water quality

Egypt is studying the possibility of creating a new inlet connecting Lake Burullus to the Mediterranean Sea to help improve the lake’s water quality, the Cabinet said on Saturday.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly reviewed a project by Arab Contractors to dredge and deepen the inlet of Lake Burullus during a tour of Kafr El-Sheikh governorate.

Lake Burullus, Egypt’s second-largest lake, currently has a single connection to the Mediterranean Sea. The government has directed officials to study the possibility of creating an additional inlet as part of efforts to develop the country’s national lakes.

The project is part of presidential directives to develop and rehabilitate Egypt’s national lakes, including Lake Burullus, Madbouly said.

The prime minister also inspected sanitation projects in Baltim, including a wastewater treatment plant designed to serve the city and surrounding villages.

The visit came as Egypt begins the second phase of its Haya Karima (Decent Life) rural development initiative in additional centres in Kafr El-Sheikh. The second phase will focus particularly on sanitation projects.
