Sixteen schools in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Aswan were evacuated on Sunday due to flooding, according to Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website.
The education ministry’s undersecretary in Aswan, Mohamed El-Awaty, told Al-Ahram that students from 12 schools in Kom Ombo district and four in Edfu had been relocated to others in nearby villages.
Egypt has witnessed unusually severe variations in weather in the last month, with heavy rains and sandstorms across the country.
The inclement weather was the first of its kind in almost 20 years, according to Egypt’s meteorological authority.
