The preliminary count of Egyptian expat votes Thursday to Saturday at embassies across the world reached 230,000, Tarek Shebel, member of the general secretariat of the Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) and member of the general committee supervising expat voting, told Al-Ahram Arabic news website.
PEC announced on Saturday that Egyptians abroad will be allowed to vote until Monday, 19 May, granting them one extra day to cast their ballots in Egypt’s presidential elections.
Expat voting, which started Thursday, was scheduled to end on Sunday at 9pm.
According to Ambassador Badr Abdel Atti, official spokesperson of Egyptian foreign ministry, the turnout so far is almost double that of January’s constitutional referendum.
Voting in Egypt will take place 26 and 27 May.
