Cairo University Students Protest Ban On Political Groups

Students held a protest at Cairo University on Wednesday against a recent decision to ban politically-linked groups on campus.

Students allegedly affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, according to Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website, demonstrated in front of the university’s central library.

They called for releasing detained students and faculty members, and chanted against the university’s administration while security personnel closed the main building’s gates to prevent the protestors from entering.

Cairo University President Gaber Nassar announced on Sunday that student groups would be dissolved in the upcoming academic year if they were used for any political or partisan activities.

The new academic semester at universities is expected to start on 11 October.

The previous academic year saw an unprecedented wave of protests and clashes on Egyptian campuses, following the ousting of president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Fourteen students were killed in the violence, and hundreds have been jailed for illegal protests or causing violence. Hundreds of other students have been suspended or expelled from their universities for protesting.
