The Egyptian National Railways signed a US$700-million agreement with China to finance and operate an electric train in Alexandria’s Abu Qir, governor Hani al-Meseiri said Wednesday.
The project, which will be funded by a Chinese bank, is set to have a capacity to transport 1.5 million passengers monthly over the 22 kilometre-route divided over 16 stations and set to be completed within three year.
Al-Meseiri has signed the protocol with a delegation from the engineering group of China’s railway authority and representatives of Dongfang Electric Corporation in the presence of Egypt’s railway’s representatives for the electrification of the Alexandria-Abu Qir railway line to start in January.
