Egypt among countries who helped foil terrorist attacks in Russia: FSB head

Egypt is among countries to have cooperated with Russia to foil a number of terrorist attacks in the country, Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Alexander Bortnikov said Wednesday, according to Russian news agency TASS.

“We had the most fruitful cooperation this year with the special services of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, India, Egypt, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Serbia,” Bortnikov told a meeting with the heads of special services, security agencies and law enforcement agencies in the southern city of Krasnodar.

According to Bortnikov, several attacks were thwarted, with members of “international terrorist organisations linked to this plot identified and detained.”

The FSB chief thanked his “partners” for their cooperation in ensuring security at two main sports events, 2016 Ice Hockey Championship and the 2017 Confederations Cup, without giving more details.

“We expect further constructive cooperation during the preparation for and the hosting of the World Cup in Russia in 2018,” Bortnikov said.

He added that those trying to carry out attacks against Russia were Islamic State group militants, which he said has set up positions in Afghanistan. Source: Ahram online
