Egypt’s FM urges comprehensive approach adoption to combat terrorism

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry urged the adoption of a comprehensive approach to combat terrorism worldwide, saying terrorist attacks were operated by a number of countries to reach political goals.

During his speech at the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held on 25-26 October in Baku, Shoukry presented Egypt’s vision on a number of regional and international issues, including the crises in Libya, Syria, Yemen, and the Palestinian cause.

On regional conflicts, Shoukry said the most critical were those targeting the concept of the” nation state”, stressing it was crucial to fight attempts to divide states and dismantle institutions.

He announced the rejection of foreign occupation and interference in other countries’ domestic affairs, saying it was imperative to apprehend those responsible for serious crimes, including genocides, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

He also discussed Syria, describing the Turkish offensive in northeast Syria as a violation of international law and the principles of the Non-Aligned movement. He called for an immediate suspension of the offensive, and a “withdrawal of aggressor troops”, stressing the importance of the immediate commencement of the political process under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254.

Shoukry called on all Libyan parties to uphold national interests. Terrorism sponsored by a number of countries had to come to an immediate halt, he added.

The foreign minister highlighted Egypt’s support of the adoption of a political resolution to end the crisis in Yemen, and the continuation of efforts to secure free navigation in the Red Sea and prevent arms transfer to extremists in Yemen.
