A suicide car bomber killed two people at the Church of Christ in Nigeria

A suicide car bomber has killed at least two people at a church in the troubled central Nigerian city of Jos.

Witnesses said the suicide bomber rammed his car into the Church of Christ during an early morning service.

A Reuters reporter at the scene saw two bodies, but a churchgoer told the AFP news agency that three members of the congregation were killed and 10 hurt.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion will fall on the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram.

The group has carried out a number of bloody attacks across Nigeria in its quest to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.

It admitted attacking several churches across the country on Christmas Day 2011, killing nearly 40 people at one church outside the capital, Abuja, alone.

Boko Haram has also claimed responsibility for a string of bomb blasts in Jos on Christmas Eve 2010 that killed at least 80 people.

Ethnic and religious tensions have run high for years in Jos and Plateau state, of which it is the capital.
