Algeria suspends friendship treaty with Spain

Algeria suspended on Thursday the Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighbourliness, which it had signed with Spain in 2002. This came after the Spanish situation towards the Western desert issue had changed for Morocco’s benefit.

This decision would affect important sectors such as energy, security, migration, and terrorism in the Mediterranean.

For its part, Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Alvarez, announced that it was analysing the implications of this decision and would respond quietly and resolutely.

“Algeria is well known for being a trustworthy supplier of gas and has given guarantees from the highest level of its government, that the gas will keep flowing,” Spanish Foreign Minister José Albares said.
