Several airports throughout Egypt will be either opening or undergoing expansion as the tourism sector is projected to recover, the Civil Aviation Minister Hossam Kamal announced Thursday in a meeting for operational plans and projects with the managers of the 23 Egyptian airports.
The minister said the Marsa Matrouh airport will be opened on the first of May to receive domestic and international flights, as the tourism movement is expected to increase this year.
The Assiut Airport is also opening in July after expansion works that took 12 months.As for the Nozha Airport in Alexandria, the upgrading of the runway has been completed and test operations for helicopters and light aircraft have been conducted successfully, while expanding the airfield and the passenger terminal building are expected to be completed by March.
The Taba airport runway efficiency has been increased to allow daytime and night operations with a capacity of 600 passengers per hour.
The minister has also reviewed the studies of the Ras Sidr airport.The Hurghada airport management has completed 80 percent of the new runway.With regard to the Cairo airport, the minister reviewed the maintenance of the 05R runway that was equipped with an automatic landing system to facilitate landing in adverse weather conditions and low visibility.
