Egypt’s Cabinet approves new seeds company to boost local production, cut imports

Egypt’s Cabinet approved on Thursday the establishment of a state-backed company to produce vegetable and fruit seeds locally, as part of efforts to strengthen food security and reduce imports.

The decision followed the government’s 88th meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly.

Under the plan, the Agricultural Research Centre (ARC) will establish an Egyptian joint-stock company called Arco Seeds.

The company will be formed in partnership with the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development, the Agricultural Bank of Egypt, the National Company for Protective Cultivation, and private sector firms operating in the sector.

The initiative aims to meet domestic demand for seeds and expand local production, in line with government efforts to reduce reliance on imports and improve the use of state assets.

Egypt has been seeking to strengthen its agricultural sector as part of broader efforts to enhance food security and support economic growth.
