Cabinet to form new emergency and crisis committee

Egyptian Prime Minister Shreif Ismail ordered to form an emergency and crisis committee to address any emergency in all governorates where citizens’ safety is threatened due to floods, he said in a statement released by the PM’s office.

The committee will also propose urgent solutions to provide the necessary requirements, subsidies and, compensation to be granted to the victims of any crisis. It will also help coordination between the concerned ministries and supply them with necessary aids.

Cabinet secretary general Amr Abdel Menem will be head of the new committee. It will include representatives of Ministries of Defence, Interior, Social Solidarity, Health, Transportation, Electricity, Water Resources, Supply, and Housing.

Meanwhile, the education Directorate in Beheira announced that 68 schools in the governorate did not work Monday due to its losses because of the recent heavy rains.

Six people died in Alexandria, 15 in Beheira, and three in Gharbeya due to the floods and heavy rain, according to the Ministry of Health.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi visited Alexandria on Sunday and announced the allocation of EGP 1bn from the “Tahya Misr” fund and EGP 75m from state budget to work on maintenance within 10 days.

This was the second time heavy rain struck Alexandria and other governorates. In October, the first wave of floods resulted in the resignation of then-governor of Alexandria.

General Ahmed Al-Edkawy was appointed as the new governor, who served before as a secretary general of Alexandria governorate. In 2007, he was head of Alexandria’s Sharq district.
