Canada Shares Up Backed by Mining, Industrials

Canadian shares edged upward Tuesday, as Toronto’s S&P/TSX Composite Index (CA:$ISPTX) +1.12%rose 0.9%, or 117 points to 12,860.

Metals and mining stocks (XX:TTMN) +2.01% were the top-performing sector, up 1.9%, while industrials (XX:TTIN) +1.34% rose 1.5%.

Among the highest percentage gainers were energy and commodity companies, including HudBay Minerals (CA:HBM) +5.73% , climbing 5.7%, and Major Drilling Group International (CA:MDI) +6.69%, up 5.3%.

Despite sector gains across the board, gold stocks moved into negative territory.

Shares of NovaGold Resources (CA:NG) -1.89% slipped 2%, followed by Eldorado Gold Corp. (CA:ELD) -2.44% , down 1.8%.

In currency trading, the Canada dollar USDCAD -0.61% gained on the U.S greenback, with one U.S. dollar purchasing C$1.0176 vs. C$1.0227 Monday.
