CAPMAS: Egypt’s production of rice falls 4.5%

Egypt’s production of rice dropped 4.5 percent in the year 2013/14 to reach 5.5 million tonnes, according to the latest bulletin of the state’s statistics agency CAPMAS released Thursday.

In the year 2012/2013, the country’s production of rice stood at 5.7 million tonnes.

The CAPMAS further stated that the country’s production of grain also fell 9 percent to 21.9 million tonnes, compared to 24 million tonnes a year earlier.

Furthermore, Egypt’s production of wheat also retreated to 9.3 million tonnes during 2013/2014, compared to 9.5 million tonnes in 2012/2013, marking a 1.9 percent decline.

On the contrary, production of vegetables surged 3 percent to reach 21.8 million tonnes in 2013/14, from 21.1 million tonnes in 2012/13.

Production of fruits also grew 8.7 percent to record 10.5 million tonnes in 2013/14, compared to 9.7 million tonnes a year earlier.
