China is set to increase its refining capacity by 0.8 to 1.1 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2028, according to the latest US Energy Information Administration (EIA) Global Refining Outlook.
The outlook shows that the growth will be driven by five major projects to boost the production of key petrochemical feedstocks, including naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). However, analysts caution that government regulations—such as import license requirements and export quotas—could affect the timing and success of these projects.
Additionally, the expansion may lead to the closure of smaller, independent refineries due to heightened competition.
