Communication Ministry to boost Internet Speeds to 4MBps end 2016

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) eyes boosting internet’s minimum speed to 4 MBps at the end of 2016, Assistant to Minister for Telecommunications Khaled Sherif said Sunday.

Ministry’s strategy targets increasing speeds at minimum of 1 MBps this month then increasing it to 2 MBps in January 2016, Sherif added, expecting that internet’s minimum speed will reach 4 MBps at the end of 2016.

Sherif clarified that Egypt is not among the states nominated for the growth according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) due to slow internet speeds.

A report released by ITU showed a list of Arab states representing internet speeds; among the list were UAE, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Morocco and Jordan.

Moreover, Sherif noted that internet providers are negotiating with Telecom Egypt (TE) about the agreements of renting the infrastructure in order to provide the new speeds with low prices.
