DEWA’s EV Green Charger service rise by 59% in 2023

The electrical vehicles (EV) Green Charger initiative by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) saw a 59 per cent rise in the use of its Green Charger services for electric vehicles in 2023, which is a remarkable surge that shows the initiative’s effectiveness in advancing green mobility in Dubai, WAM reported on Sunday.

From 2015 to 2023, the initiative supplied 23,419.821 MWh of electricity for EVs in Dubai, enabling them to travel a total of 117 million kilometres.

The initiative advances the UAE’s regional leadership in EV adoption, as the UAE has one of the best ratios of charging stations to EVs in the world.

The initiative also enhances green and sustainable mobility in Dubai, in accordance with the Emirate’s strategic goals for sustainability, air quality, and greenhouse gas emission reduction.

Since 2015, EV usage in Dubai has grown considerably; by December 2023, the emirate had 25,929 EVs, which helped Dubai achieve its goals of moving to greener and more sustainable mode of transport.

The initiative registered more than 13,959 EV owners by the end of December 2023, up from only 14 in 2015.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said the goal was to make Dubai the best and most prepared city in the world, aligning with the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative 2030 and the National Electric Vehicles Policy.

Al Tayer continued that they are dedicated to helping the UAE reach net zero by cutting the transport sector’s carbon footprint and energy use by 40 per cent, lowering carbon emissions by 10 million tons by 2050, and raising the EVs’ share to 50 per cent of all vehicles on UAE roads by 2050.

“We will continue to foster the use of electric vehicles through the continuous development of green charging stations using technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he added.

DEWA has set up 382 EV green charging stations in Dubai, with different types of chargers and outlets, where customers can access the stations anytime and locate them through DEWA’s website, smart app, and other platforms.

They can also register their EVs through DEWA’s website, smart app, or IVR and use the stations within an hour.

DEWA also offers the EV Green Charger User Dashboard and the guest mode feature to help customers charge their EVs.
