Dowidar: Mobile Operators to Impose Charge on Balance Query

The three mobile operators (Vodafone, Mobinil, and Etislat) intend to generally charge one piaster on the balance checking service used after calls, as a way for increasing their revenues.

In this regard, Eng. Hatem Dowidar, CEO of Vodafone, emphasized that this an attempt by the mobile operators to obtain new revenues, pointing out that the continuous decrease in the minute rate in addition to the competition between the mobile operators have caused a decline in their profits.

Dowidor added that these new fees have no relation with the one-piaster-per-minute tax proposed by a Shura council member some days ago, and which is considered by Minister of Finance Momtaz El-Said. Dowidar also emphasized that using this service is optional.

Mobile operators have started today notifying the subscribers via text messages that a one-piaster-charge will be applied on the balance query service for prepaid plans. On the other hand, customer expressed their dissatisfaction regarding this matter, keeping their fingers crossed for the tax to be imposed on calls.
