Canada’s Bombardier inks Egypt new capital city monorail agreement

Egypt and Canadian Bombardier Inc., one of the world’s largest transportation companies, have signed Tuesday a memorandum of understanding to build a monorail in the Egyptian new capital city.

The MoU was signed by Egypt’s New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) to conduct studies on the monorail linking Nasr City with New Cairo and the country’s new capital city, NUCA’s vice chairman Mazin Hassan said.

Hassan added that the studies would be in cooperation with Egypt’s Ministry of Transportation. The ministry will provide Bombardier with all the data needed such as the location and the existing infrastructure along the monorail’s route, as well as the number of passengers, which is expected to reach 1.5 million.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi previously said that Egypt is planning to open the first phase of the new capital city project within 2018, while the whole project is expected to be completed within five to six years.
