Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Chevron reported positive results from drilling the Nargis-2 well in the Mediterranean Sea, with evaluations indicating up to 35 metres of net gas pay.
Drilling began in May through a partnership involving Chevron, its partners, and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). The well reached a total depth of more than 5,000 metres.
The results confirmed the extension of gas-bearing reservoirs previously identified in the Nargis-1 well and revealed an additional gas-bearing interval with high-quality reservoir properties.
These findings will support further technical studies to assess the discovery’s overall potential and development prospects, advancing efforts to appraise the 2022 Nargis discovery and accelerate its commercial development.
Nargis-2 was drilled to assess the extensions of the discovery and test deeper geological intervals as part of efforts to expand exploration activities and maximise the potential of the Mediterranean Sea, including formations characterised by high pressures and temperatures.
Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi witnessed the start of drilling operations aboard the Stena Forth drillship in May. He stressed the importance of accelerating the appraisal and development of undeveloped gas discoveries and strengthening cooperation with international energy companies to capitalise on Egypt’s petroleum and natural gas resources.
