Egypt, China call for coastal states to lead Red Sea security

Egypt and China said on Wednesday that Red Sea security and governance should primarily be the responsibility of the region’s coastal states, calling for greater regional cooperation to protect shipping and international trade.
The two countries said stability in the Horn of Africa requires respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of its states, according to a joint statement.
They stressed that Red Sea coastal states should take the lead in ensuring the security and governance of the waterway, and that their wishes should be fully respected.
Egypt and China called for stronger cooperation among coastal states to address common challenges and ensure freedom of navigation and the flow of international trade.
The two countries also agreed to strengthen political and security coordination on regional and international issues.
The statement was issued during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Egypt, where he held talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
