Egypt clarifies EgyptAir remarks

Egypt’s Ministry of Civil Aviation clarified on Tuesday that statements attributed to Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El Hefny during a Senate general session included inaccurate wording that did not fully reflect the substance of his remarks.

The ministry said El Hefny had confirmed during the session that EgyptAir achieved record financial results during the 2024/2025 fiscal year, marking the highest annual profits since the company’s establishment in both local and foreign currencies. The ministry attributed the performance to the success of the company’s development plans, improved operational efficiency, and optimal utilisation of resources.

The minister also reviewed the state’s ongoing efforts to develop and modernise the civil aviation sector, including raising the efficiency and capacity of Egyptian airports, supporting EgyptAir’s fleet modernisation plans, and improving passenger services in line with international standards to enhance the sector’s regional and international competitiveness.

Regarding service quality, El Hefny said international airline ratings are based on specialised technical and operational standards and requirements, adding that not targeting a five star rating does not diminish service quality, as several major global airlines with distinguished operational and service standards are classified within the four star category.

The minister also highlighted the impact of fuel prices on operating costs, noting that the aviation industry is highly sensitive and operates with profit margins ranging between 2 per cent and 4 per cent. He added that the rise in global fuel prices resulting from the Iranian American war during March and April increased costs by around $53 million.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation called on media outlets to ensure accuracy and objectivity when circulating information in order to preserve credibility and professional standards.
