Egypt discusses $1.5b phosphate fertiliser complex in Ain Sokhna

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, and Fertiglobe CEO Ahmed El-Hoshy discussed on Sunday plans to establish an integrated phosphate fertiliser complex in Ain Sokhna with investments exceeding $1.5 billion.

The project aims to produce 1.3 million tons of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilisers annually, with commercial production targeted to begin in 2031.

Badawi highlighted the project’s importance in strengthening integration between the mining sector and downstream industries, transforming mineral resources into higher-value industrial products. He stressed the need to complete the necessary technical and economic studies to assess the project and its requirements.

El-Hoshy presented the project’s preliminary plans during the meeting.

Both sides also discussed opportunities to localise AdBlue production, a solution used to reduce harmful vehicle emissions, by leveraging domestic urea production.
