Egypt finishes 1st successful whole lung transplant

Egypt’s professor of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Ain Shams University Ayman Tharwat has revealed on Sunday the details of the first fully lung transplant, which took place at the hospital of the university.

The operation took more than 15 hours as three anesthesiologists and surgeons had participated in each of the three operating rooms, Tharwat highlighted.

Tharwat added that up to 25 doctors, other nursing and accompanying staff have participated in the operation, adding the preparation has lasted for two full months.

He further mentioned that a number of the participating medical staff had previously traveled to Japan and had training courses, for a year and others for six months.

Noteworthy, that A Japanese expert came to Egypt specially to supervise the surgery, Tharwat pointed out.
