Egypt, Greece to sign electricity link-up this week

Greece and Egypt are set to sign on Thursday a preliminary deal to build a large electricity cable connecting the two countries, a spokesman for the Greek Environment and Energy Ministry announced on Wednesday.

This will be the first agreement of such kind to be signed between Europe and Africa in the southeastern Mediterranean.

Greek Environment and Energy Minister Konstantinos Skrekas and Egyptian Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker will sign on Thursday a memorandum of understanding, the spokesman added.

Egypt, which has a surplus of electricity, commenced talks in 2020 to sell power to Europe, pressing its advantage as a producer of cheap renewable energy, seeking to become a regional export hub.

Egypt has also been in discussions with Greece and Cyprus in recent months to build a subsea cable linking the three countries.
