Egypt in talks with Income Group on solar power, battery production

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held talks with Income Group Chairman Hesham Sheta to explore potential cooperation in solar power generation and energy storage, the Cabinet said in a statement on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on plans to establish a solar power plant to supply clean electricity to technology projects and data centres, as well as a battery manufacturing facility aimed at localising energy storage technologies.

The discussions also reviewed Income Group’s investments in IT and data infrastructure, with both sides highlighting Egypt’s geographic position as a strategic hub connecting Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Minister Esmat underscored the role of private sector involvement in implementing Egypt’s energy strategy, particularly in boosting renewable energy capacity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and supporting green manufacturing.

The proposed battery plant is intended to meet growing domestic demand and support exports, aligning with Egypt’s broader energy transition agenda.
