Egypt invites Ethiopia, Sudan for Renaissance Dam discussions

Egypt has invited Ethiopia and Sudan to a meeting in Cairo to discuss the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on Oct. 4-5, said Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hossam Moghazy.

Experts and representatives from the French consultancy firm BRL and Dutch consultancy firm Deltares are expected to attend. They will be tasked with assessment of the environmental, social and economic impact of the construction of the dam.

Moghazy said the Egyptian National Committee of the Grand Ethiopian Dam will lead the meeting to discuss the points of contention.

The meeting will precede technical studies to determine the effects of the establishment of the dam on downstream countries, reported state-run MENA news agency.

Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan signed a declaration of principles on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam last March in a meeting of the trio’s top leadership in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
