Egypt officially joins TIR Convention

Egypt has officially joined the U.N. trucking treaty TIR Convention on Monday, a major step in the country’s plan to boost trade and stimulate economic development.

The North African country deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention on 16 December 2020.

It is one of the most successful international transport conventions and the only universal customs transit system in existence. The TIR Convention remains one of the most successful international legal instruments developed and managed under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission of Europe (UNECE).

The convention works to facilitate the movement of goods across as many borders as necessary with limited intervention by customs authorities at intermediate borders. To this end, operators use a commonly accepted Customs transit document – the TIR Carnet, which also works as a guarantee for the customs duties and taxes of the goods in transit.
