Egypt plans new $457mn-terminal in Sharm el-Sheikh Airport

Egyptian civil aviation ministry plans to establish new terminal at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport with estimated cost of US$457 million, minister Hossam Kamal stated Tuesday.

The new terminal is set to be established on the area of 206,000 square meters with the capacity of 10 million passengers annually to accommodate the expected passenger traffic by 2025, the minister said.

Kamal added that the total capacity of Sharm el-Sheikh Airport is expected to reach 17 million passengers by the end of 2025.

In January 2016, civil aviation ministry is to start upgrading the airfield of Sharm el-Sheikh Airport through establishing new E+ landing area in addition to a tarmac that encompass 40 planes with different models with estimated cost of US$130 million, the minister noted.

He clarified that the ministry is planning to establish low cost carrier terminal (LCCT)  at Borg El Arab Airport with cost estimated at US$120 million and the capacity of 4 million passengers. Accordingly, the capacity of Borg El Arab Airport will reach 5.6 million passengers per year.

The new terminal is set to start operation during the first quarter of 2016 and will be implemented with a fund secured by  Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

Minister Kamal said that ministry’s plan targets developing El Nouzha Airport through finishing the project of developing the terminal ,which started in 2015, at the middle of 2016. Additionally, the ministry aims at investing the vacant areas at the airport in during three years.
