Egypt reviews plans to boost strategic food reserves

Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Hussein Eissa, reviewed efforts to increase the country’s strategic reserves of essential food commodities amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and global market challenges.

During a meeting on Sunday, officials discussed mechanisms to secure additional reserves of key commodities to strengthen the state’s ability to meet citizens’ needs sustainably and to ensure the availability of goods in local markets in suitable quantities and at suitable prices.

Eissa said recent global crises and geopolitical developments highlighted the importance of maintaining safe and sufficient reserves of essential commodities to protect markets from potential disruptions or shortages.

He added that the government and private sector are key partners in achieving food security and protecting consumers’ interests, stressing the need for continued coordination among relevant authorities, producers, and suppliers to ensure market stability and the uninterrupted availability of goods.

The meeting also reviewed plans to expand one-day markets across governorates and increase the number of permanent outlets to improve citizens’ access to commodities, support market balance, and ease burdens on consumers.

Officials stressed the importance of continued monitoring of strategic commodity supplies, affirming that the state has mechanisms enabling immediate intervention in the event of shortages to maintain market stability and protect citizens.
