Egypt, Russia discuss oil, gas and mining cooperation at GECF Summit

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev in Moscow to discuss bilateral cooperation in oil, gas, and mining, on the sidelines of the eighth Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Summit.

Badawi reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the Moscow Declaration, submitted by the forum’s 28th Ministerial Meeting to the summit for adoption. The declaration underscores the role of natural gas in energy security and sustainable development, the sovereign rights of producing countries over their resources, and the need for sufficient long-term investment to ensure secure gas supplies.

The talks reviewed improvements in Egypt’s oil and gas investment climate, particularly following the settlement of outstanding dues to investment partners, as well as opportunities to attract investment in gas exploration.

On mining, Badawi proposed identifying specific long-term projects of interest to Russian investors and establishing a technical communication channel between Egypt’s Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority (MRMIA) and relevant Russian entities.

Both sides stressed the need for a structured mechanism to follow up on cooperation in oil, gas and mining, and to coordinate positions within the GECF ahead of its 29th Ministerial Meeting.

The meeting took place within the framework of the strategic partnership between Egypt and Russia and their broader cooperation across several sectors, including energy.
