Egypt wheat procurement tops 3.2m tons in harvest season

Egypt’s local wheat procurement exceeded 3.2 million tons during the 2026 harvest season, representing 64 per cent of the government’s target, amid continued financial incentives and expanded collection facilities for farmers.

Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk said the cultivated wheat area reached a record 3.7 million feddans this year, up by 600,000 feddans from last season, as Egypt prioritises wheat production to strengthen food security.

Farouk said the government targets procuring 5 million tons of local wheat this season after President Abdel Fattah El Sisi raised the procurement price to 2,500 Egyptian pounds per ardeb to support farmers and encourage higher supply volumes.

He added that more than 400 collection and receiving points have been established nationwide, while farmers’ dues are being paid within 48 hours of delivery as authorities continue monitoring procurement operations throughout the harvest season.
