Egyptian Driver, School Officials Sentenced Over Student Death

A Giza misdemeanours court sentenced the principal of a school, the school’s nutrition officer and its head of security to three years in prison and LE1,000 bail each (posted ahead of appeal), and a driver to two years and LE500 bail on conviction of charges of negligence after a student was run over and killed by a food delivery truck in October.
The driver of the truck killed grade five student Adham Abdel-Al and injured another, prompting the Ministry of Education to refer the driver and other officials to the prosecution.
The case of Abdel-Al is one of many student deaths this semester. At least three other students died this term alone due to deteriorating conditions on school premises.
Earlier this week, 19 students were killed — many burning to death — when a truck rammed into a school bus in Egypt’s Nile Delta governorate of Beheira.

A further 10 college students died in separate road accident in Upper Egypt’s Sohag governorate in November.
