Egyptian Killed In Benghazi Crossfire

An Egyptian man was caught in the crossfire and killed in militant clashes in Libya’s Benghazi, state news agency MENA reported on Wednesday.

On-duty health officer in Benghazi Medical Center Nasser El-Gehani said that Al-Hashemi Ahmed Moftah’s corpse had a gunshot wound.

Egypt has been concerned with the growing militant insurgency in Libya and both countries announced a plan to disarm the latter’s militants and reach stability.

There have been a number of recent murders and kidnappings of Egyptian expatriate workers in Libya in recent months, as rival militias and a toothless central government struggle for control.

An Egyptian man was killed on 19 September also in Benghazi by unknown assailants.

The Egyptian foreign ministry has already issued several travel warnings to its citizens to avoid the conflict-ridden territory.

Egypt also organised multiple flights to repatriate several thousand Egyptians who had fled from Libya to Tunisia after escalating violence in July.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, between 330,000 and 1.5 million Egyptians worked in Libya until an uprising toppled Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. It is unclear how many Egyptian workers remain in Libya at present.
