Egyptian Police Disperse Pro-Morsi Protests In Cairo

Egyptian security forces dispersed protests by supporters of ousted Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi on Friday in Cairo, Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website reported.

A pro-Morsi demonstration in Haram Avenue in the Giza part of the capital was dispersed by teargas fired by police. Demonstrations also took place in the working-class district of Imbaba.

Demonstrators were also dispersed near Heliopolis; dozens fled Gisr El-Suez Street after blocking it with burning tyres, Al-Ahram reported, saying other protesters also marched in the nearby district of Ain Shams.

The National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy, a pro-Morsi coalition, has called for a week of renewed protests starting Friday to mark what they dubbed the “Eid of the Martyrs.”
Muslims celebrate the holiday of Eid el-Fitr starting on Monday. The festival marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Weekly demonstrations after Friday prayers have been common since Morsi’s ouster last year. The number of protesters has greatly diminished following a sustained crackdown by police, in which tens of thousands of Morsi supporters have been arrested.
