Egypt’s Cabinet celebrates IARC recognition of hepatitis C eradication model

Egypt has been recognised as a global model in eliminating hepatitis C and preventing liver cancer, the government said on Sunday, citing findings by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

IARC praised Egypt in a July release after the country became the first worldwide to earn the WHO’s “gold tier” status for eradicating hepatitis C.

The milestone follows the government’s 100 Million Health Initiative, which screened more than 64 million people for hepatitis C and noncommunicable diseases, providing treatment and care in line with international standards, according to a Cabinet statement.

The statement added that the recognition underscores Egypt’s commitment to public health and efforts to sustainably cut infection rates while improving access to advanced treatment and prevention services.
