Egypt’s green public investments hit EGP 215.5 bln in FY2024/25

Egypt recorded 215.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($4.2 billion) in green public investments during fiscal year 2024/25, with transport projects accounting for more than 70 per cent of the total, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development said Tuesday.

The investments covered seven priority sectors as part of the government’s strategy to integrate environmental sustainability into economic development and support the transition to a greener economy, the ministry said in a statement.

Transport projects accounted for 71.5 per cent of total green public investments, followed by the Hayah Karima (Decent Life) rural development initiative at 10.5 per cent, sustainable urban development at 8 per cent, environmental improvement at 4.5 per cent, agriculture and irrigation at 3 per cent, and clean energy at 1.5 per cent. Communications projects accounted for the remainder.

The ministry said 87 per cent of the investments were allocated to climate mitigation projects, while the remaining 13 per cent supported climate adaptation initiatives.

Planning and Economic Development Minister Ahmed Rostom said Egypt aims to raise the share of green public investments to 60 per cent of total public investment in the current fiscal year 2026/27, up from 15 per cent in fiscal year 2020/21.

“The continued expansion of green investments will help improve Egypt’s position in the Climate Public Investment Management Assessment (C-PIMA),” Rostom said.

Rostom said green public investment during fiscal year 2024/25 financed projects including the Cairo Metro, the high-speed electric railway, renewable energy plants, solid waste management systems, and hazardous medical waste disposal facilities. Climate adaptation projects included wastewater treatment plants, canal rehabilitation and lining, desalination plants, coastal protection and development works, soil improvement, and irrigation modernisation.

Under the Hayah Karima Initiative, green investments also supported drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities, and canal rehabilitation projects, the ministry said.
